Energy Intelligence Analyst

Job Description

We are looking for a detail-oriented Energy Intelligence Analyst to own the ongoing maintenance and accuracy of our NEM project database. This is a largely self-directed role responsible for tracking approximately 1,000 utility-scale projects,
monitoring their development status, ownership, commercial arrangements, and regulatory milestones on a weekly basis.

This is not a passive data entry role. The person in this position will be expected to exercise judgement, reconcile conflicting information across multiple sources, and maintain a high-integrity dataset that underpins a commercial product.

Key Responsibilities:

Database Maintenance

  • Maintain and update the Energy Synapse NEM project database on a weekly basis across approximately 1,000 active projects
  • Track key project attributes including development status, technology type, capacity, ownership structure, offtake agreements, underwriting, grid connection status, and key milestones
  • Push validated updates to the Energy Synapse GitHub repository following established data conventions and version control practices

Research & Monitoring

  • Monitor developer websites, media announcements, and industry reports for project updates and status changes
  • Review Excel files published by AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) and reconcile against the existing database
  • Look up projects across state government development portals and planning registers to verify approvals, conditions, and status changes

Discrepancy Resolution

  • Identify and flag discrepancies across data sources, which will be common given the fragmented nature of Australian energy project reporting.
  • Independently research and resolve discrepancies using available sources, applying sound judgement on which data is most current and reliable.
  • Document the basis for data decisions where sources conflict, so reasoning is traceable.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the utility-scale power generation development process in Australia, including planning approvals, grid connection, offtake, and financing stages.
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of data integrity.
  • Strong research skills with the ability to find, evaluate, and reconcile information from multiple sources.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including structured data management and comparison across large datasets.
  • Experience with GitHub or willingness to learn basic version control workflows for file management
  • Ability to work independently, manage a regular weekly workflow, and self-prioritise without close supervision
  • Strong written English for documenting data decisions and flagging issues clearly.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, including but not limited to Business, Economics, Environmental Science, Geography, Planning, or Engineering. More important than discipline is a demonstrated understanding of the
    commercial development lifecycle for utility-scale energy projects, whether gained through study or work experience.”
